USA Port Disruption | October 2024

The following ports on the East Coast and Gulf Coast of USA are currently subject to strikes and industrial action:

  • Port of New York/New Jersey
  • Port of Savannah, GA
  • Port of Houston, TX
  • Port of Miami, FL
  • Port of Boston, MA
  • Port of New Orleans, LA
  • Port of Charleston, SC
  • Port of Baltimore, MD
  • Port of Philadelphia, PA
  • Port of Wilmington, DE
  • Port of Mobile, AL
  • Port of Tampa, FL
  • Port of Freeport, TX
  • Port of Jacksonville, FL

This is the current consensus on likely impacts:

  •        All operations at ports are suspended.
  •        No cargo will be discharged or loaded causing significant disruption in the supply chain.
  •       For every day that the ports remain closed, it is estimated it will take approximately a week to recover and return to normal operations. There is potential for significant ongoing delays and port congestion.
  •      The likelihood of increased costs relating to storage and extra handling are high, and the use of alternative routings is expected to hike charges.
  •        Disrupted shipping schedules as vessels unable to dock in port and potential impact on wider global supply chain.

US dockworkers union, the “Longshoreman’s”, are demanding a $5 per hour increase every year for the next six years and are demanding that the ports won’t introduce automative services.
